Lamu District is located on the Indian Ocean along the northern coast of Kenya, to which it belongs. The most-visited area is the archipelago of islands, which lie between Lamu in the south and Kiunga in the north. The largest of the islands are Pate Island, Manda Island and Lamu Island. The smaller islands include Kiwayu and Manda Toto. Today the largest town in the archipelago is Lamu Town, on Lamu Island. For the traveler, Lamu is an exotic experience, made even more enjoyable by the relaxed and welcoming attitudes of the locals. Visiting Lamu is comparable to entering another world, and the visitor subconsciously finds themselves becoming a part of this world. Life decelerates down, and long days are spent strolling along the waterfront, exploring the town or relaxing on the beaches.
Come to Lamu Town to see and feel a beautifully preserved piece of history. Walking Lamu’s narrow streets of coral stone you will experience perhaps the oldest and best-preserved Swahili community in East Africa.
